Sadly, this doesn't seem to work for any kind of complex layers, be they text, layer trees or layers with masks. As mentioned in stenci's answer and in comments, Text layers are treated differently. GIMP won't let me cut, copy, paste or clear selections.
Adding or subtracting selections Report an error in Bugzilla. Neither did turning it into a floating selection for whatever reason.
The Move tool is automatically activated when you create a guide. I wonder what a better way would be.
But now, I'd like to move the K next to the B and enlarge them, so that they fill up that entire space. I'm not sure why they didn't make the move tool behave like that too. Ubuntu Web Upd8: Any idea on what I am doing wrong?
This should be trivial, but it does not seem possible. Sometimes, the dock windows I had lost their contents but dragging them a bit on their window bars made their contents reappear. I didn't think I would have to look this hard to figure out how to move a selection.
If the Move Mode is Selection, you can click-and-drag any point in canvas to move the selection outline. Rotating and scaling selections seem to behave as expected automatically creating a new layer. Select layer. I ended up using a screen grabber to capture the different parts of the image and paste them back in as layers.
